Athens is an easily accessible destination, connected with direct flights from 112 cities around the globe with flying time of 3 hours from Paris, 1.5 hours from Istanbul, 10.5 hours from New York, 11.45 hours from Singapore, 4 hours from Doha.
Every year, millions of visitors come to Athens. For the majority of them, the best way to arrive to Athens is by air, but there are, of course, alternative routes by train, car or ferry boats which leave from various ports of Italy as well as train journeys through the Balkan Peninsula. Visitors to Athens and Greece from the European Union countries and Schengen countries do not need a visa and can travel with their IDs.

By air
The Athens International Airport, Eleftherios Venizelos is connected daily with over 70 cities around the world with the average flying time from European destinations being 2,5 hours (1,5 hour from the Middle East).
Located 33 km (20 miles) southeast of Athens, it is easily accessible via Attiki Odos, a major highway constituting the Athens City Ring Road. Public transport to Athens and the port of Piraeus is provided by the metro, express airport bus connections, taxi and high-speed rail.

By road
Athens can be reached by road via the Western Balkan countries, Bulgaria, Albania and Turkey.
By sea
There are daily ferryboat connections from Italy (Ancona, Bari and Brindisi, Venice and Trieste) to Patras, the second largest port of entry to Greece, approximately 220 km (135 miles) from Athens.
By train
The main railway network of Greece currently provides links between Athens and Northern and Southern Greece and the rest of Europe through the Western Balkan countries and Bulgaria.

ATMs:Â They are widely available in Greece for Master or Visa cardholders.
Banks: Banks are open from Monday to Thursday, 8:00-14:30 hrs and on Friday, 8:00-14:00 hrs; on Saturdays and Sundays they are closed. Central branches of some banks may be found open until 20.00 daily and from 10.00 to 16.30 on Saturdays. For further details while in Athens please consult your hotel concierge.
Credit cards:Â All major credit cards are accepted in almost all hotels, shops and restaurants. Stickers in the front windows will advise you as to which cards are accepted.
Currency: The Greek currency is Euro (€).
Climate: The average minimum temperature (usually the minimum temperature is noted during the night) in Athens in June is 25.0°C . June is a dry month with an average of 25mm (1.0in) rain. You can expect very pleasant temperatures during the day. The average maximum daytime temperature lies around 24.0°C .

When in Greece, International visitors may seek any help they might need (police, ambulance, fire brigade, coast guard) by ringing 112.
Electricity:Â Electricity is 220 V/50 Hz. Plugs are the standard continental (DIN) type with two round pins.
Healthcare:Â Emergency treatment is free to all in public hospitals. Public and private hospitals can be found in big cities. Small and large islands usually have hospitals and health centers.
Language:Â Greek is the official language. Most Greeks speak English as a foreign language.
Local time:Â The local time zone in Athens is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+ 2 hours) and 7 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time.
Restaurants:Â Restaurants and taverns are normally open for lunch from 12:30 to 16:00, for dinner from 19:00 to midnight. Fast food and souvlaki shops usually serve food all day long, and some of them stay open till late at night. Cafes and bars are open all day from about 8:00 until late at night.
Shops: Athens offers a large variety of shops, from quaint little shops selling antiques, curiosities and jewelry, to fashionable shops selling well-known designers’ clothes and objects. In the centre of Athens, shops operate: Monday, Wednesday and Saturday 09:00 – 16:00, Tuesday & Friday 09:00 – 21:00. On Sunday shops are open in the tourist area of Plaka in central Athens.
Taxis: Taxis in Athens are cheap and easy to find. You can normally pick them on the road at any time of the day. Sometimes, taxis may be the only or, at least, the best transportation choice (when bus connections are inconvenient, in the small hours etc). You may find yourself sharing a taxi with strangers… While this is illegitimate in principle, it is, however, an everyday Athenian little habit.
Telecommunications:Â The international access code for Greece is +30. The outgoing code is 00 followed by the relevant country code (e.g. 001 for the USA or Canada, 0044 for the United Kingdom). For information concerning mobile phone use in Greece (telephone transmissions are based on GSM technology), please ask your provider.
Tipping:Â Tipping is not compulsory but is quite usual in Greece.
Visa: Greece follows the Schengen Agreement provision and the subsequent acquis concerning short term visa issues stays of up to three (3) months in the Schengen area. The citizens of these countries are not subject to border controls within the common area (airlines or other carriers require identification – I.D. card or passport or any other piece of identification issued by a public authority). Citizens of the EU countries do not need a visa to enter Greece (and the Schengen area).
